25 Aug 2009 - 03:21

“Over the last 12 months, many of the emerging wireless technologies are being adopted by OEMs who are beginning to exploit market sectors ranging from home automation to industrial and consumer electronics”, according to Kirsten West, principal analyst with WTRS. “From wireless sensor networks to wireless connectivity to Telecom applications, emerging wireless-based products are beginning to penetrate the market. While growth in some sectors has been slowed by current economic conditions, the overall picture today is one of general positive market expansion”.

ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 to Take Key Role in Smart Meters and the Home Area Network
West Tech: Wireless

30 Jun 2009 - 15:24

Smart Metering applications are evolving and becoming standardized today. Among the standards being evaluated, ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 have made significant progress penetrating the Smart Metering market application.

“The emergence and growth of the Smart Grid is at a dynamic and critical stage today as protocols are chosen and standards defined in support of the various components” according to Kirsten West principal analyst with WTRS. “Smart Meters and the Home Area Network represent fundamental components of the overall grid, and wireless protocols such as IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee could be key players in that market.”

In Spite of Risks, Strong Market Growth Forecast for ZigBee in Smart Metering Applications
West Tech: Wireless

22 Jun 2009 - 15:25

"ZigBee plays a strong role in smart metering as one of the primary contenders to connect the stand-alone or meter-integrated AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) gateway into the home, as well as the basis for creating the home area network (HAN) of appliances and electronics that will be networked to the meter," according to Kirsten West principal analyst with WTRS. "The primary risk to market adoption lies with the uncertainty regarding consumer acceptance of these new use cases and options afforded by AMI that include demand response and general electricity usage monitoring."

Will WiMAX Markets Be Constricted By Global Economic Conditions?
West Tech: Wireless

1 Apr 2009 - 15:27

New release of the WTRS WiMAX Emerging Technology Report 2009 finds WiMAX has achieved a strong foothold in the market today with deployments throughout the world. Market drivers for WiMAX include global availability of spectrum, superior throughput while maintaining mobility, and interest demonstrated by large range of component, OEM, and service providers. These drivers are not significantly affected by economic conditions. In the near-term there may be some delay in the deployment of WiMAX infrastructure, but WTRS forecasts a timely resurgence.

“Demand for WiMAX in North American and European markets for products in the mobile communications category are likely to be depressed over the coming 18 months, but that is an excellent opportunity for service providers to complete infrastructure build-out in order to be ready for WiMAX-hungry consumers after the economic uncertainty has passed,” according to Kirsten West, principal analyst with WTRS. “However, in developing nations the story is quite different.”

Strong Market Growth Forecast for Low Power WiFi in Wireless Sensor Networks
West Tech: Wireless

5 Jan 2009 - 16:57

New forecast in the latest edition of the WTRS Wireless Sensor Network Technology Trends Report projects strong market growth in the market for Low Power WiFi chipsets to reach 322% CAGR, over the 2008 to 2013 period.
"For years the largest misconception about WiFi has been that it cannot be optimized for 'low power' sensor network operation," according to Kirsten West principal analyst with WTRS. "This gave rise to alternative development projects, such as the creation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and software stack variants based on IEEE 802.15.4. Recently several companies have developed Low Power WiFi products that exhibit power consumption on par with competing ZigBee or IEEE 802.15.4 components."
